Canal Pub on the Trent and Mersey Canal

Guide To Green Man

Situated alongside the Trent and Mersey Canal at 1 Canal Bridge in Willington, The Green Man is a historic gem dating back to the mid-18th century, making it the oldest pub in the village. This Grade II listed establishment was originally built to serve as a grain store and hostelry for the canal and even functioned as a mortuary in the past.

After a £160,000 refurbishment in 2021, the pub now beautifully combines traditional charm with modern comfort, while still preserving original features such as wooden beams, flagstones, and fireplaces. The Green Man includes distinct areas: a bar for drinking and socialising, a lounge for dining, and a sports area equipped with screens and a sound system.

Outdoor enthusiasts can also enjoy the expansive beer garden, which accommodates up to 100 people, making The Green Man a popular destination for locals and visitors exploring the scenic waterways of Derbyshire.

We randomly came across this pub which turned out to be the pub quiz night. 2.5 years later myself and a bunch of others have been going every week! Great fun, good friendly staff great food. Brilliant night out every time

Genuinely the best beef roast dinner I’ve had including ludicrously expensive “fine dining” places. The beef was incredible, homemade yorkshires and delicious cauliflower cheese. Great traditional pub atmosphere. Wish I’d discovered it sooner, will definitely be back.

Brought here by my In-laws for lunch. The place was clean and very friendly. Food options plentiful and prices were keen. Food was presented nicely and was a delight to the taste buds. Service was excellent and waiting time for food was very reasonable. It’s worth noting that they are dog friendly and you can get free refills of coffee !!

This pub is a real find and we’ll be back again soon.

Not in the options below are the chicken, ham hock and leek pie which was full and delicious and the mac n cheese was plentiful with the garlic bread making it perfect.

We went for Sunday lunch for the first time yesterday and it was excellent! Two meat choices and a vegetarian option. Very reasonably price and the portions were huge and extremely tasty. The best Sunday lunch option in the village. The beer choices are good too!
