Canal Pub on the Llangollen Canal

Guide To Willeymoor Lock Tavern

Nestled along the picturesque Llangollen Canal on the Cheshire-Shropshire border, the Willeymoor Lock Tavern is a charming family-run establishment with a rich history and character.

Originally a lock keeper’s cottage, it was converted into a small licensed café in the 1960s before becoming a pub in 1978 under the ownership of the Gilkes family, who still operate it today.

This traditional country pub offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere in an idyllic waterside setting beside a working canal lock, making it a perfect spot for “gongoozling”—the pleasure of watching canal boats navigate the lock. It is popular with locals, walkers, boaters, and tourists alike.

The tavern features a varied menu of classic pub dishes, complemented by an impressive selection of hand-pulled cask ales from breweries such as Salopian, Stonehouse, and Weetwood. The outdoor space includes a large beer garden, lockside seating, a canalside terrace, and a children’s play area, all while maintaining traditional pub hours with closures between 3 PM and 6 PM daily.

Great little, slightly old fashioned and quirky, inn by the side of the lock. Lovely welcome and great service. This place is worth a visit even if it’s just for a drink. Lots of choice too

It’s a nice place to sit and watch the canal boats go through the lock.

The carpark has had new gravel put down, whilst perfectly fine for cars, leaves a lot to be desired when riding a motorcycle.

A great spot on the canal, dog friendly with a good choice of drinks and food at fair prices.

Visited on a canal boating holiday, moored almost outside.

Great pub, friendly, reasonably priced drinks and canalside views. Only had a drink so can’t comment on the food but looked nice.

What a beautiful wee pub, sat on the canal side. Really friendly staff, excellent ales and beers. Didn’t eat but the food looked and smelled amazing. Absolutely gorgeous place in summer with loads of outside seating.
