Canal Pub on the Macclesfield Canal
Guide To Ye Olde Kings Head
Nestled along Byrons Lane in Gurnett, Macclesfield, Ye Olde Kings Head is a testament to centuries of local history. This charming establishment, which dates back to 1695, initially served as a smithy before transforming into a beloved public house. The historic building features an L-shaped bar that creates three distinct seating areas. Conveniently located near the Macclesfield Canal, it has become a popular destination for boaters and walkers exploring the picturesque surroundings, including the nearby Grade II-listed Gurnett Aqueduct. Fully refurbished in 2015, the pub maintains its quaint and cosy village inn atmosphere while offering well-kept cask ales and quality dining options for visitors seeking both historical charm and contemporary comforts.

A superb pub for the family. The food is excellent, steak sandwiches and the chunkiest of chips. The service is excellent, a real homely accomodation. The selection and quality of beer is superb. This is a must stop place if you’re in Macclesfield. Walk the forest and the canals and make sure you end up here. Many thanks for a wonderful experience.

Lovely this cosy little place just off the canal.
It’s our first time visiting today for Sunday lunch. Gorgeous, fresh food & friendly staff. Dog friendly too 🐶 Can highly recommend the roast dinner & the venison pie 🥧

We stopped in on a recent trip up the English canals, invited in by some charming folks on the tow-path. It was amazing. Exceptional food, both modern and classic. A wide range of tasty gluten free. Kind and helpful staff that warmly welcomed us on a grey and muddy day. Lovely guests who engaged us in lively banter in a cozy dining nook in front of an open fire. A chef who checked on us during the meal and then upon hearing from the wait staff that I’d never had a sausage roll, appalled, he sent me one from the kitchen gratis. Thanks all. You are beautiful. We loved it.
