Canal Pub on the Coventry Canal

Guide To The Market Tavern

The Market Tavern, located at 21 Market Street in Atherstone, is a beautifully decorated traditional pub that overlooks the picturesque market square.

Recently refurbished while preserving its historic charm, this delightful establishment features a welcoming main bar, a cosy snug at the rear, and a first-floor room showcasing original timber framework that once supported wattle-and-daub construction. The walls are adorned with historic images of the local area, creating a connection to Atherstone’s rich past.

Beer enthusiasts will appreciate the selection of seven rotating ales and real cider, while a variety of food options are available throughout the week, including traditional Sunday roasts. During the warmer months, guests can relax at the café-style seating in front or enjoy the pleasant garden at the rear.

With amenities such as a real fire, traditional pub games like darts, and a dog-friendly policy, the Market Tavern Tap combines historic charm with modern hospitality. The friendly staff are dedicated to making everyone feel welcome.

The last time I drank here was during the covid era, I can definitely say the beer has vastly improved since my last visit, I believe under new ownership since that time. Not only is the ale excellent and plenty to choose from but the whole atmosphere of the pub is great. Very traditional bar, cosy and welcoming from both the staff and their customers. There is the bonus of a decent beer garden. Outside the front of the pub is a nice open square and with Atherstone being quite small all the other pubs and shops are walking distance away. Allow about 10 minutes to walk to the railway station. The bus stop is even nearer.

We had a beautiful evening at Market Tavern. The owners were very kind and helpful. The portions offered were perfect and the atmosphere was amazing.

It was amazing to see how beautifully they have restored and maintained the heritage structure.

New management took that place to the next level with a generous, wide and diverse choice of craft beers and ales on tap. It also has amazing traditional pub food like scotch egg and sausage rolls. The refurbishment really kept the old spirit of the pub and you can tell it’s been done with taste and knowhow. This is the best pub in the area and became my new favourite. 100% recommend.

Lovely little gem! Some great beers on offer and the food was out of this world. Nice street food style nothing too formal. The pub has a nice old fashioned feel and the bar staff Jo, Tracy and Rhys are really good and helpful. New management have done a fabulous job
