Canal Pub on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal

Guide To The Anchor Inn

The Anchor Inn is a historic establishment dating back to 1655, located in the quaint village of Salterforth.

Its fascinating architectural evolution reflects a rich heritage alongside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Originally known as “The Traveller’s Rest,” this remarkable pub predates the adjacent canal by over a century. Significant reconstruction took place in 1795 when the waterway was built, resulting in a unique two-tier cellar system: the original bar became the new cellar, while the living quarters transformed into the current bar area.

One of the inn’s most distinctive features is the spectacular display of stalactites and stalagmites found in the centuries-old lower cellar. These natural formations were created by water seeping through limestone over more than 200 years and are often showcased to curious visitors.

This canal-side haven offers a welcoming atmosphere with comfortable furnishings and separate rooms, including a pool area. There is also a picturesque beer garden overlooking the waterway, which features a children’s play area. The Anchor Inn is popular among countryside walkers and canal travellers alike, serving home-cooked food made from locally sourced ingredients alongside a selection of traditional cask ales. It maintains its reputation as both a historical landmark and a cherished community gathering place.

(Edit) recently called in because I heard it was under new management open everyday from 12 and they have cleaned the place! Hopefully this pub flourishes again as it’s a great place and I would hate to see it become one of the closed pubs that seem to litter the country these days. Good luck to the new people in charge

How can you run a pub if the doors closed most of the time? 3 times I’ve come across this when the times on google say open!?

Friendly local pub. Just stopped for a drink after a long walk along the canal. Great little spot to begin walks (car park across the road) with a lovely beverage at the end. Interesting pub with stalagmites and stalactites in the basement (not that I saw them). Will visit again!

Lovely pub meal last night and a great pint to wash it down with.

Right on the canal and although it is still getting going, give it a chance.

Great service

Great little find, stayed overnight in the camper twice and each time had a great night, lovely down to earth comfort food served by happy smiling staff and the friendly landlady Debbie. Right by the canal for a evening walk and secure beer garden to let the dogs have a run. 10 out of 10, Will be back soon
