Canal Pub on the Llangollen Canal
Guide To The Bridge Inn
The Bridge Inn, affectionately nicknamed "The Trap" by locals, is a charming pub located on the banks of the Llangollen Canal in Chirk Bank.Historically, this pub was part of the J Edwards & Sons brewery empire based in Weston Rhyn. Inside, a vintage sign playfully states that it is the “last pub in England” on one side and the “first” on the other—an amusing reference to its strategic border location that often inspires friendly banter among its predominantly Welsh patrons.
The interior features rustic quarry-tiled floors and cosy fireplaces, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Outside, a spacious decking area offers stunning views of Thomas Telford’s aqueduct and Henry Robertson’s viaduct crossing the rushing Ceiriog River.
Known for serving quality real ales, including Banks Amber and Sharps Doom Bar, alongside delicious home-cooked meals, The Bridge Inn also holds significant historical importance. It witnessed the last labourers’ revolt in North Wales on January 3, 1831, when miners protested against low wages in the vicinity.
Today, this Travellers’ Choice award-winning establishment continues to entice visitors with its spectacular sunset views, regular entertainment such as Sunday quizzes, and an ideal blend of English hospitality on the edge of Welsh terrain.

Stopped for some lunch. Traditional old pub with seating outside overlooking the aqueducts. Nice pub grub and reasonable prices

Good food, good service and good atmosphere. A nice little country pub right on the Wales England border with views of the aqueduct and viaduct.

A pub with good beer that sells great food rather than a chain restaurant pub that sells lacklustre beer. Spitting distance to the canal, great atmosphere and lovely staff. A fantastic view of the Chirk aqueduct from the sun terrace at the end of a day’s cruising. Much more character and authenticity than the other pub that’s nearby. Quiz on Wednesdays, curry night on Thursdays, pool table and friendly locals. Highly recommended!

This was a lovely pub on the boarder! Would definitely go back. The service was lovely and prompt. The food was good for the price and the atmosphere good and what you want to expect from a pub.

We went for a Sunday lunch, the food was disappointing, the service was mediocre. It was a fairly average pub.
