Third time we have hired the dry Dock to black our boat. Joe is always very helpful and helps out if needed.

I took my boat to be blacked here and was surprised at the 2 day turnaround.
The blacking starting falling off in clumps after about 6 weeks. When I was passing by again I asked Joe to have a look and he agreed that it was substandard and he would do it again for free as a “goodwill gesture”. As it turned out I wasn’t returning via Newbury for a year so I contacting him again requesting a partial refund so that I could get my boat re-blacked elsewhere, he flatly refused and stopped responding to my emails.
Complete waste of money.
Still no response from Joe Bate so I am still very out of pocket for a substandard job.

Warning to all narrow boaters!
We got our boat blacked at Greenham Lock Marina in June 2023 by Jo in the Dry Dock.
A year later our boat is red rusty.
Despite having written to Jo in the Dry Dock his attitude regarding this has been very defensive and dismissive.
Having considered legal action this will entail further costs which I could do without at the moment.
Therefore I have decided to warn other boaters of my experience at this Dry Dock in Newbury Berkshire.
I would not encourage you to get your valuable boat blacking done by Jo in the Dry Dock at Greenham Lock Marina, he has a terrible attitude and clearly does not prep the boat adequately prior to putting minimal coats of Ryland blacking on.
You have been warned…

Took my boat to Joe to get the blacking done maybe 4 or 5 months ago now. After cruising around and bumping my boat here and there the blacking has held very nicely. Fantastic job thank you Joe 👌. I’ll be back again 👍👍👍
