Canal Pub on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal

Guide To Wharf Tavern

The Wharf Tavern, located at 77-79 Caroline Street in Stalybridge, is a charming traditional pub situated alongside the Huddersfield Canal. This historic establishment was formerly owned by Gartside's Brewery Ltd, whose name used to be displayed in the end windows. The Granger family has run the pub as a welcoming free house for many years.

The well-furnished, family- and dog-friendly tavern maintains its traditional character while offering modern amenities, including a function room, beer garden, and bed and breakfast accommodations. Beer enthusiasts can enjoy a selection of real ales, such as Bomber, Wainwright, and Copper Dragon, all available at reasonable prices.

A unique feature of the Wharf Tavern is its connection to a fish and chip shop owned by the landlord. Patrons are welcome to bring their food inside to enjoy with their drinks, which enhances the establishment’s community-focused atmosphere. With its canalside location and traditional pub experience, the Wharf Tavern represents a slice of Stalybridge’s heritage and continues to serve as a beloved gathering spot for locals.

Great pub. We visited on Friday. It was Friendly! Clean. Lovely local barmaid. She even rang the last orders bell for me 🙂 We went next door for fish and chips and got to eat in inside too.
