Canal Pub on the Montgomery Canal

Guide To The Navigation Inn

The Navigation Inn, located along the scenic banks of the Montgomery Canal in Maesbury Marsh, is a charming establishment with a rich local history dating back to the 18th century.

Originally built as a canal warehouse in 1798, this beloved venue—fondly referred to by locals as “The Navvy”—has transformed into a popular destination while preserving its historical character through features like exposed beams and inviting real fires.

For nearly eleven years, the current owners, Brent and Mark, have lovingly maintained this canalside gem, creating an atmosphere that combines rustic charm with contemporary dining. Visitors can enjoy ethically sourced, home-cooked meals either in the cosy indoor dining spaces or al fresco on the picturesque canalside patio, all while appreciating a building that “oozes character and history.”

True to its welcoming philosophy, The Navigation Inn proudly accommodates four-legged companions, setting itself apart from the “stuffy country pubs” that often prohibit dogs and muddy boots. Instead, it warmly embraces walkers, families, and their dogs as they explore the beautiful surroundings of the Montgomery Canal.

Beautiful old pub by the canal side. We stopped in for Friday dinner after mooring up within a very short walking distance.

Hosts were friendly and welcoming and the pub has its own charm. Good range of ale on the bar. Everything we ate was absolutely delicious, battered chicken/courgettes to start, scampi, chicken pie and duck breast for mains.

Everything was cooked perfectly, in good time and really felt like proper home cooking. The chips in particular were the best I’ve had in a long, long time. I wish we lived closer!

11 of us visited here today on our way back from Wales, (12 if you include our dog!) We rang at short notice but there was no problem accommodating us even though we arrived close to last orders. The service was really friendly and helpful. The food was really good and all the adjustments the kids wanted were accommodated without any problem. Would definitely recommend visiting.

Had an early evening meal sitting at an outside table in the sun by the canal. Couldn’t have been better. The staff were very friendly and efficient and the food was absolutely lovely. We were on holiday but would definitely go again if in the area.

What a warm welcome from Mark and Brent. Huge kindness in donating matches so that we (and future St Winifreds well visitors ) can light the log burner. Quirky, fascinating and beyond lovely. Do not miss this magnificent place!
