Canal Pub on the Shropshire Union Canal

Guide To Dysart Arms

The Dysart Arms is a charming country pub located in the picturesque village of Bunbury, Cheshire.

It has a rich history that dates back to the mid-1700s when it originally served as a farm for the Tollemache family, the Earls of Dysart, whose coat of arms still adorns the door. This quintessentially British establishment is part of the Brunning & Price collection and features a warm, inviting atmosphere complete with roaring fires, antique prints, and higgledy-piggledy bookshelves. The pub maintains a bright, airy ambience and boasts a lovely beer garden overlooking the churchyard.

The Dysart Arms has evolved over the years, having historically served as a pub, farm, and abattoir in the nineteenth century. Remarkably, the exterior has changed very little since the 1950s, as shown in historical photographs. The culinary offerings include expertly prepared pub classics such as ribeye steak, pan-fried halibut, and Sunday roasts, which have earned the establishment recognition as the third-best restaurant in Tarporley.

This pub is the perfect destination to conclude a country walk, with downloadable circular routes available on their website. Visitors can enjoy a genuine taste of traditional British pub culture in a historic setting that once served as a filming location for the ITV show “Home Fires.”

There are some lovely roadside pubs in this area, we’d walked the canal from Hurleston locks and I had found this pub on google so despite the other local pubs looking very inviting, we stuck with our original choice and were so glad we did.

This pub has one of the nicest beer gardens we’ve ever sat in. The trees and flowers are beautiful, tables are well spaced and on one side overlook the beautiful village church. It was peaceful, calm and just so serene even on a busy Sunday.

We hadn’t booked but this wasn’t a problem – a pleasant surprise nowadays. The staff were professional, attentive and welcoming.

The food was fabulous, we both had the Sunday roast, everything was cooked well and portions were generous and served hot – another pleasant surprise nowadays. The Yorkshire puddings had a really nostalgic homemade taste, not like the giant burnt crisps most pubs seem to serve.

I wish we lived closer, we would be regulars here!

They had a varied beer selection on tap, some really delectable looking desserts we sadly didn’t have room for and the pub itself is gorgeous.

I can’t wait to go back on another sunny afternoon, really can’t rate the beer garden highly enough, it was just so relaxing and picturesque.

We felt like we were old friends with the welcome, even though we’d not been before, but were with relatives who had. Lovely friendly service & prompt order taking. The baked brie starter was delicious, and one of our party really enjoyed the prawn cocktail. We enjoyed the fish & chips too. Too full for dessert..will save room next time!

My wife had a prawn cocktail starter, which was full of prawns. The sauce was very good, brown bread & butter.

I had the Spanish meat platter, which was lovely.

Mains were fish & chips, ham chips, fried eggs, old school.

Service was 1st class.

We visited the Dysart Arms for Sunday roast, lamb and pork- is a die for! Beautiful place, we were lucky to get a table by the fireplace. The stuff is very friendly and the food served quickly. We will be back for sure. Highly recommend!

A special trip from Wilmslow for a lovely afternoon out with my hubby. We love, love, love this place. Every time we come we get such a warm and lovely feeling. The staff are superb, the food is delicious and there are alway several things I find hard to choose between on the menu!

We had mushroom and parsnip soup, wild boar pie and cider and cheese pie. All sooooo tasty 👌🏼 , followed by a small pudding and hot chocolate and a coffee. So scrumptious❤️

Thank you to everyone there. You really do run such a special place and work so hard.

Shame we couldn’t stay all day but we had a fairly long journey home in the dark due to the time of year😒, but we’ll be back again (not on a Friday next time so we can use our vouchers 😜)

We didn’t have to book, but we phoned up just in case. If it had been a weekend I would advise booking, but they are very accommodating I’m sure they’d fit you in somehow even if they were busy.

My husband just said “Don’t give too good a review or it’ll get too busy!”😄😄😄
