There is a tower known as John o’ Gaunts Chair. The Shire Hall displays shields, but most of the castle is used as a prison. Escorted tours can be arranged.

We used the Lancaster Park and Ride to get to the castle, the buses were comfortable and the drivers really nice and helpful.
The castle itself is large but you cannot visit lots of areas and you cannot photograph in the Civil and Criminal Court areas.
Your entry includes a Guided tour that is highly recommended as it is interesting, informative and well delivered.
The tour takes you through the castles history, much of it being as a court, prison and place of execution and explains the relationship to various monarchs who have held the Duchy of Lancaster.
There is a nice comfortable cafe, with a relaxed atmosphere, toilets are clean and fresh.

The castle was beautiful and well maintained. I did a guided tour which was interesting and informative with plenty of stories and humor. There are 2 rooms civil and criminal courts, where you are not allow to take pictures, but are so beautiful. I would highly recommend the experience.
Also there is a room where you can read about the history of the witches.
The fact that it was one of the oldest prison in all UK.
There is a plaque from the late queen Elizabeth.
To have the tour there is a schedule where are different hours and you decide which is the best for you.

Wonderful place to witness history. The guided tour was amazing, would recommend it. There is no fee for visiting the premises of the castle. There is a cafe within the castle as well.

Arrived not really knowing what to expect and with no intention of doing a tour. However the very engaging man at the ticket office talked us into doing the tour and as it turns out I’m glad we did. ‘King’ David was an extremely entertaining guide and got us all involved in the commentary during the tour. Educational content and drama was in abundance and my wife and I were very happy with the afternoon in the castle. Highly recommended.

I must say we were disappointed. The castle entry is only by guided tours. It cost £25 for three of us (2 adults and a child).
The tour is for one hour. They take you only to some places on the ground floor. You do not get to go to any other places, upper floors or roam around freely inside the castle. You cannot take any photograph inside the castle. You only get to see some parts where prisoners were kept and the court room. Nothing more than that.
Also, be aware that the Police Museum is only open on Thursday and Friday. So, if you visit any other days, you cannot enter those premises.
It didn’t feel like worth the money.
The staff are friendly. That’s the only plus.
Do I suggest you visit the place? Maybe my answer would be No.
