Guide To Hand Hotel

The Hand Hotel, located in the heart of Chirk on Church Street, is a magnificent Grade II listed building with over 400 years of history etched into its weathered stones and oak beams.

Originally built in 1610 during the reign of James I, this historic establishment started as a coaching inn for weary travellers journeying between London and Dublin. Its prime location is near the historically significant Offa’s Dyke and the nearby Chirk Castle.

Hotel has recently reopened after new owners have taken over. Somehow between the change of owners the hotel has lost its on line presence. The current owner is trying to sort that so you can book online and find it on booking.com etc, but for now you’ll have to contact them directly to book. Consequently it is very quiet and that might explain the lack of food reported by one reviewer. I stayed with a few friends booked in advance. Our experience was of efficient, very friendly service, breakfast was very good as was the restaurant in the evening, though I would advise booking your evening meal in the morning so you are expected.

We’ve booked again for next year, and I’m sure once the on line presence is sorted it’s going to get busy again.

When arrived i was told my room was not ready and shouldnt be long, i had travelled a lot that day all i wanted to do was put my feet up, the staff was lovley about it and apologised when my room was ready half hour later i seen it had a bath i was well happy …. To my shock there was no water pressure so that took a long time to full, the beds was lumpy and not long enough i am 6 foot but i paid for a deluxe room this did not feel like a deluxe room bathroom was tiny and bed was uncomfortable. However i can not complain about the staff or the food was delicious the only one thing i would suggest is put signs on doors mind your head as they are very low and my god it hurts first thing in the morning, for the value i feel like breakfast should be included bit over priced for what you get.

Our group of four stayed here in a Family Room as we hiked north along the Offa’s Dyke trail. Javen on reception was incredibly helpful and went out of his way to assist us. Unfortunately, most of the rest of the staff we encountered, while very nice, seemed somewhat confused and not well suited to customer service. Our bedroom (room 2) was clean and the beds comfy, but every heating pipe in the hotel seemed to run through the room and it was ridiculously hot. We managed to wedge one of the old sash windows open with a glass which allowed a little air in, but the road outside can be very busy and noisy late into the evening. The shower in room 2 needs some maintenance work as it was hard to set it to a constant flow or temperature. Overall I was left disappointed and would have rated the hotel lower if not for all of the help provided by Javen.
