Guide To Hertford Castle

Built in 1100 Hertford Castle belonged to the Cecil family. In 1216 Prince Louis of France overthrew the besieged castle in 25 days using siege engines.

A few of the remaining medieval structures are the 12th century curtain wall and the 15th century gatehouse. Some of the outhouses of the castle are now in the surrounding Water Lane and Fore Street.

Lovely park and gatehouse. (Castle) Slightly spoiled by the traffic on the A414. Kids play ground could benefit from an upgrade. Hosts great events across the year. Castle is free entry when open normally during when the events are on. Can gain access to the Hertford tunnels if you know who to ask…

See, feel and live history for free. Walk around the well kept grounds, along the castle walls and enjoy your visit.

Nothing really remains of the actually castle, however there is a magnificent brick gatehouse which now serves a multitude of purposes. These include offices, wedding venue and you can actually arrange a tour.

The small park is very nice with a children’s play area, walks and a small river occupied by ducks.
