Guide To Wharf Inn
The Wharf Inn is a distinctive pub known for its unique castle-turreted appearance.Originally built in 1814 by William Dobson and named The George, this historic establishment boasts over 100 years of rich heritage. In the late 19th century, the Gilbert family added its characteristic castellations. During this time, Mrs. Gilbert managed both the inn and the canal business, even operating her own narrowboats named after her daughters.
Today, The Wharf Inn is run by Darren, a chef with 28 years of experience who once apprenticed at this very location, and his partner Anna, a well-travelled narrowboat owner who understands the importance of a good canalside pub. The venue features a splendid enclosed garden along the bank of the River Avon, complete with a heated decking area, and offers four recently refurbished en-suite bedrooms.
The Wharf Inn has become a popular starting point for walking groups exploring the numerous well-signposted footpaths in the surrounding countryside. Its location near the historic lime kilns—once the largest kiln site on the Grand Union Canal—and its recognition as the Rural Pub of the Year Winner 2023 make it a must-visit destination for both canal enthusiasts and those seeking to explore the natural beauty of the Northamptonshire landscape.

After going through Foxton locks, took the narrow boat here for the evening. Great pub, with great service and a live band. The highlight of the meal was definitely the breaded brie wedges with red currant jelly… Absolutely delicious! For our mains, we had the fried haddock, rump steak, and the lamb, which were all great.

After looking for a halfway venue to meet our son for a good pub meal, we found Wharf Inn on the internet and booked up on the basis of the good reviews. On entering, I was in two minds as the dining area looked quite basic but full marks to the welcome we received from the very busy bar lady, the waiting staff and service could not be faulted and the food quality was fabulous. We were definitely not disappointed and if we lived nearer, we wouldn’t hesitate to come back. Recommended.

This is a lovely place to go for a meal. Our party of five really enjoyed our food, which included a delicious homemade chicken and mushroom pie, potatoes and fresh vegetables. Delicious deserts including apple and cherry crumble. Very yummy. Very friendly and efficient service.
