Lovely place but don’t visit on a Monday as they’re closed. We only called as we were passing so will have to have a proper visit another day.

Why haven’t we visited here before?! We had a full day arriving for coffee then visited castle got only half way round broke off for lunch went back to finish and visit museum. Had afternoon tea and walked round the moat/lake. So much history all very well explained. Beautiful buildings renovated to a high standard. The museum was absolutely fascinating with so much to see.
Tea room one of best. Good extensive menu. Excellent food and generous portions. The staff throughout the site are knowledgeable, courteous and helpful.
We shall return!

We visited the castle and cafe on a Saturday afternoon. There was plenty of parking available. The cafe had plenty of tables but was quite busy with afternoon tea bookings. There are lots of food options; breakfasts, toasties, baguettes, sandwiches and jacket potatoes. There are cakes and hot drinks and snacks such as crisps and cold drinks available to buy. Cannot consume own food inside the cafe, fair enough! It seems a popular place for cyclists to pass through.
The museum inside the castle was really surprisingly brilliant. It was really interesting. There’s a laundry room with clothes for little ones to dress up in. There’s a fantastic school room, absolutely brilliant. The main hall room is breathtaking. The chapel is beautiful. There are talking visuals in the rooms to help paint the picture of what life was like for the bishops and their families living in the castle.
There are little hidden rooms, a beautiful library, floor upon floor of rooms to discover and so much to see.
There are two lifts in the castle and so it’s really accessible to take pushchairs / wheelchairs through.
It’s not really busy with visitors so it’s a really pleasant day out. You can easily take pictures without other visitors in the shot!!
It’s a different experience to visiting a national trust venue!

Recently visited this charming castle. The staff in the entrance and shop were so friendly. On entering the castle,of which we were the first two visitors we were greeted by an extremely friendly lady who gave us a talk about the castle and then left us to carry on our tour..
In certain rooms there are talking pictures that give you more information with fascinating stories.
We found it so enjoyable because you didn’t know what to expect around each corner and what rooms you would come across. I came to one room which was the classroom and found my wife sat at the desk dressed up in school attire…it did make me laugh. Then I found her in a secret room hidden through the wardrobe..very entertaining..part way round we went back to the cafe and had a cuppa and a bite to eat to recharge our batteries and then did the museum part.
Before leaving we walked around the outside of the castle before heading back home…
Definitely worth a visit as they cater for all ages and interests..
Thank you for letting us enjoy this part of history.
