Castle on the Horncastle Canal

Guide To Tattershall Castle

Tattershall Castle is 1 mile north-east of Tattershall Bridge and was originally a small motte-and-bailey not used so much for military defence but rather as a centre for revenue collection from the surrounding farmland.

Rebuilt in brick and limestone as a grand keep for the Lord Treasurer of England, Ralph, Baron Cromwell, in the 15th century, it had four storeys as well as a basement.

Very interesting, a fair price at £10 per adult, informative staff, great views from top, reasonable sized car park. Hot and cold drinks available on site and well maintained public toilets

Beautiful venue for a wedding with stunning grounds, you are also allowed up on the very top for wedding photos.

Just a note there are no toilets in the actual castle, if you get cut short there’s a good 2 minute walk to the toilets just near the exit of the grounds.

Today’s couple had drinks and a very light afternoon tea in the garden outside, the weather was glorious.

Beautiful castle with great history and grounds. The site is dog friendly with water points and dog ice cream sold however the tower itself is not however we spent a lovely morning with the dogs here exploring the grounds and taking it in turn to go in the castle.

The walk up the spiral staircase to the top is well worth it on a clear day with views for miles and the graffiti carved into the stones on the way up is fascinating. Each floor has several rooms to explore with tapestries and games along the way

Tho only red brick castle seen by me so far. It doesn’t seem big at first, but there is a lot to explore. Grounds are dog friendly but you will not be allowed in the castle with dog. You can plan to have here a picnic as I have seen lots of picnic benches around.

Such a shame the building and moat area was closed off to the public when we visited as told views from top floor amazing. However church next door is wonderful. Tom thumb is buried there !!!

And on certain days they sell wonderful homemade cakes and refreshments.
