Despite facing multiple closures throughout its history, including one in January 2018 due to structural concerns and another in early 2025, The Lock Vaults remains a beloved social hub for the community. It regularly hosts events such as quiz nights on Tuesdays, nostalgic karaoke sessions, and seasonal celebrations, maintaining its status as a cherished landmark in Chester’s hospitality scene.
The Lock Vaults, located at 29 Hoole Lane in Chester, are a prime example of successful urban revitalisation. After undergoing an extensive refurbishment costing £400,000 in 2022-2023, the pub received a prestigious Chester Civic Trust award in 2024. Once a neglected establishment characterised by peeling paint, graffiti, and boarded-up windows, The Lock Vaults has been transformed into a charming canalside community pub.
The exterior now features a sophisticated charcoal grey and wood-effect design, a new roof, and stylish bi-fold café windows. Inside, the renovation has revealed original brickwork, wooden floors, and decorative tiles, all complemented by vintage photographs of Chester that enhance the authentic historical atmosphere while providing modern comforts.
Went out with friends yesterday and ended up popping into lock vaults on the way . Had nibbles and drinks and it was really good .
The manager was just a lovely man and couldn’t be anymore welcoming and helpfull.
Also same goes for bar staff, such a lovely vibe guys definitely pop in and see for yourself
Glad to have finally visited this pub after it seemed to have closed a few months ago. Chatting to the guy behind the bar, it’s run by the same team that also runs The Handbridge. Nice to find it is similarly welcoming and a really good place to relax and enjoy a bit of time out.
Great Pub a short walk along the canal from the city centre. Awesome food.
Just popped in for a couple of beers, the Vaults had been living derelict for decades, such a shame for a once busy thriving canalside pub, Recently reopened to reveal a modern welcoming pub, well worth the walk al9ng the towpath from City Road,,

The refurb is excellent. The pub is very cosy .
I have never had a bad experience with the staff . I don’t find them rude at all . The prices are a litte dear, but it’s only to be expected when we are paying for nice surroundings .
