Canal Pub on the Grand Union Canal
Guide To The Old Plough
The Old Plough, located at 82 High Street in the heart of Braunston village, is one of the few remaining historical public houses in this charming canal-side community, which once boasted six different establishments. Both canal enthusiasts and locals appreciate The Old Plough’s excellent selection of Cask Marque award-winning ales, beers, and ciders. The pub also offers an extensive menu of freshly prepared homemade dishes, including thoughtful vegan and gluten-free options, all created on-site. The establishment enhances its welcoming atmosphere with modern amenities like Sky Sports viewing in the bar area while preserving its historical character. Local lore suggests that it once had pigs, hens, and geese in the yard, along with a notoriously swearing parrot that entertained patrons in the bar.
Perfectly positioned just a short stroll from the Grand Union Canal—the spiritual heart of England’s waterway network—The Old Plough continues to serve as a vital stopping point for boaters and tourists exploring Braunston’s rich canal heritage. It is also a beloved gathering place for village residents.

Best pub in Braunston and surrounding areas. Great food, obviously a very talented chef! Exceptional service by all the staff. Friendly atmosphere and very clean, it shows the owners take pride and work hard to make their business a success. We look forward to another visit. Very dog friendly 🐕

Fabulous Sunday roast! Fresh, a great array of veg, lovely thick slices of tender beef and the most enormous Yorkshire pudding on top! We stopped by here on a walk after mooring on the local canal. We were looking around the village and a local man stopped and spoke to us and told us some interesting local history and recommended The Old Plough. His recommendation was spot on, the service was great and the waitress was so nice, attentive and friendly. Very much worth a visit!

We decided try the pub for Sunday Dinner. We were very happy with it. Homemade Yorkshire’s, stuffing & a pigs in blanket. We also bought an extra dish of mashed potatoes and pig in blanket as we wanted to give our dog a couple. Having lamb on the menu was definitely a big bonus. The service was very good, the food would have got 5 stars if you didn’t have to pay for extra gravy. It is a bug bear of mine. Definitely the best in Braunston.

This is a really good pub. Their food menu is extensive, the food is well prepared, well presented and tasty. Prices are very reasonable and the real ale was well kept. The staff made you feel welcome and provided good service. No hesitation in recommending this to everyone.
