Canal Pub on the Oxford Canal

Guide To The Rose Inn

The Rose Inn, located in the charming village of Baxterley along Main Road, is a beloved local establishment that offers stunning panoramic views of Leicestershire, Birmingham, and beyond.

This picturesque country pub enjoys a prime position opposite the former Baddesley colliery site, nestled behind the village green and duck pond. It features its own orchard and a relaxing area overlooking the serene waters. As a significant historical landmark, the pub displays half of the original winding wheel from the nearby mine on a plinth next to the village pond, honouring Baxterley’s industrial heritage.

Visitors particularly appreciate the establishment’s diverse menu, which features British classics alongside special accommodations for vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets. The warm and inviting atmosphere has made The Rose Inn a cornerstone of this quintessential English village.

We booked a Sunday roast and would like to try that all meats Sunday roast @£27 per person.

We led into a reserved tiny room (not the big restaurant hall), but it could be cleaner as the floor still got food packaging, leftover a grape, some bread & crumbs on the carpet , and a sticky dirty table. Service was fantastic. They kept checking on how we settle or refill drinks, etc.

The view from the window with pond was fantastic, only the annoying warps kept coming into and frightening us a bit. The downside is the food. Appreciated the chunky slices meats was served. But we were served not freshly cooked turkey and beef. They were so dried after warmed up with microwave, and you can imagined the muscle fibres toughen and no juicy beef taste at all. On the opposite side on pork, belly was so soft, fresh, and crunchy crackling. It was the moment you think £27 per person is not worth it compares to next table paying £20 for freshly cut roast beef that juiceness, softness, flavourful and even they being told is medium rare type which we haven’t been asked or told at all. We wondered why it was double standard.

However, for side dishes like yorkshire pudding, broccoli cauliflower cheese, mash potato, roast carrots potatoes, stuffing, tiny cocktail sausage and steamed butter vegetable were all standard.

I appreciated the food being sent out quick and attentive service of waiters/waitresses.

We had the carvery feast from the sunday menu and asked for 4 plates. It was 10/10. If you’re unsure of how to order it ask the server, they know what they’re doing. Love this place. Planning to go back again soon with another group! We spent roughly £30 per person for the feast but there are cheaper options if a carvery feast is not for you!

Visited for Sunday Lunch as enjoyed eating here in the past. Food on the whole ok. Beef served without advertised Yorkshire pudding but this was rectified when asked. Service was very slow. As we had a dog we were seated in the bar. This would have been absolutely fine however it appeared we were forgotten about and had to prompt staff for desert orders. Elderly mum approached the bar to ask if we could order deserts but unfortunately she was there a while as staff were involved in a personal conversation at the time. The exterior door on the bar needs attention as closed with a loud bang every time someone entered or left the premises, therefore unable to sit and relax to enjoy meal. We do not normally write reviews but felt disappointed to witness such a decline in a once pleasant restaurant. Definitely wont be returning.
