Canal Pub on the Shropshire Union Canal

Guide To The Royal Oak

The Royal Oak in Church Eaton is a remarkable symbol of community spirit, having been a cherished part of the village since 1899.

Located on High Street, this picturesque pub was once threatened with closure but was saved in 2016 by a dedicated consortium called Lanvar Ltd. This group, consisting of 34 residents, invested their time and money to preserve this vital community asset.

Today, the Royal Oak thrives as the heart of Church Eaton, serving as a vibrant hub for local committees, sports teams, and social gatherings. The pub takes great pride in its charitable efforts, raising thousands of pounds each year through various initiatives, including the well-known ‘Oakfest’ music weekend, which supports local charities.

Situated about a mile northeast of the Shropshire Union Canal at High Onn Bridge, The Royal Oak provides a welcoming stop for visitors arriving on foot, by bicycle, or via narrowboat. With its inviting interior, friendly staff, and a selection of traditionally brewed beers—thanks to its freehouse status—The Royal Oak embodies the spirit of rural Staffordshire hospitality and showcases the strength of community determination.

A pub with passion! There is something for everyone on the menu and even a kids salad! A+ on the food, service and even the restrooms. Adam and Karly have done a fantastic job and I’m only disappointed that we haven’t visited sooner. But Shhh don’t tell everyone about this little Gem 😉

First time today at this gorgeous little pub with lovely owners, food was fab and drinks were equally as nice. Nothing was too much trouble for them and will most definitely return.

This pub was such a gem to find. Was passing through on a narrowboat and walked the dogs to it from bridge 24 (15 min walk). Ended up staying moored for an extra 2 days to experience their hospitality. Great food and a great selection of beers and amazed they sold the king of beers, Bathams!

This will now be a regular stop when I’m passing (I’ve also posted a review on The Shropshire Canal FB page).

Great to find a pub thriving, well done to the owners.

I guarantee that when you visit for food, you will say ‘wow” at some point, as the food taste is beyond… give it a try. Awesome place, service, and way beyond. Like Arnie, “You will be back”) Top kudos to Adam and Carly x

If you ever want to taste food that is cooked as good as any castro pub, in the area then you will not go wrong dining here. Adam and carley have instilled a selection of excellent crafted beers and there ever changing pop up food menus leave us wanting to try more. There staff are always friendly and willing to make you feel welcome as soon as you step through the front door. Credit to both of them.
