Canal Pub on the Trent and Mersey Canal

Guide To Malt Shovel

The Malt Shovel Inn, located along the scenic Trent and Mersey Canal in Shardlow’s Conservation Area, serves as a testament to the region's rich canal heritage.

Built in 1799 by local farmer and quarryman Humphrey Moore, this historic establishment originally included a brewery in the distinctive corbelled building next to the inn.

Over its captivating 225-year history, the inn has undergone several transformations, known as the Dew Drop for a period before appearing as the Malt Shovel in the 1891 census. It later became part of Zachary Smith’s brewery holdings and eventually joined the Marston’s family.

Today, the free house pub is managed by friends Ksenia and Lena, who took over in 2016. It retains its original character, featuring authentic beams and tiled floors while offering a diverse menu that includes breakfast, lunch, Thursday Thai nights, and Friday fish and chips. The pub also has specially made gaming tables for entertainment.

Canal travellers appreciate the thoughtful “boater’s baskets,” which offer fresh provisions for purchase. Ale enthusiasts flock to the inn for its well-kept Pedigree and 5-star CAMRA-rated real ales. Visitors can enjoy the warmth of the real fire inside during the winter months or watch narrowboats pass by from the canalside seating in the summer. At The Malt Shovel, guests experience a perfect blend of historical ambience and modern hospitality in this cherished Derbyshire landmark.

Came for lunch. Unfortunately the adjacent table (next to the bar) were loud racist disgusting bigots. I can only assume no intervention from the landlord/lady means that’s ok here. If you like your pie with a side of prejudice this is the place for you.
