Canal Pub on the Grand Union Canal

Guide To The New Inn

The New Inn, located along the historic Watling Street (now the A5) at Long Buckby Wharf, is a charming canal-side establishment that dates back to around 1600.

The current iteration of the pub was established around 1840 when Ann Bunting transformed former farm buildings into this beloved venue. This traditional British pub exudes historical character, featuring period elements, real fires, and cosy nooks and crannies that create a romantic atmosphere, transporting visitors back to the early days of canal navigation.

Nice canal lock side pub. Very nice beers/ales. Good menu available and we were told how good the Sunday lunch was, but we didn’t eat there.

Lovely food, including excellent Sunday roasts. Right on the canal lock so you can watch the boats come and go. Nice walk nearby along the Buckby Lock flight. We always take our overseas visitors there to see both the canal system and the boats.

Popped in here during my canal bike ride for a quick bite and a drink, and honestly, it was just what I needed. The staff were super friendly and on the ball—no waiting around, which is always a win when you’re hungry and a bit windswept. The pub’s got this cozy, old-school charm, with canal bits and bobs all over the walls that give it a laid-back, nautical vibe. Definitely one of those spots where you think, “Yeah… I could stay for another pint.”

We have stopped here for a meal several times when passing on our boat. The food is always well cooked and good portions. Staff are very friendly and helpful. We enjoy our visits.

Gorgeous Pub on the A5 north of Weedon at the side of a canal with a working Grand Union Canal lock, Beware, at speed you may blink and miss it. Pub Car park just before the venue on the northbound side of the A5, a large lay by prior to that, there is also parking north of the pub immediately after the A5 canal bridge though this also serves canal traffic. Lovely people, lovely atmosphere, lovely building. Good real Ale and other standard offerings, Fabulous food all at reasonable cost.
