Canal Pub on the Grand Union Canal

Guide To The Three Horseshoes

Nestled along the picturesque Grand Union Canal at the Winkwell Swing Bridge, The Three Horseshoes is a historic Grade II listed pub that has been serving travellers since 1535, making it a cherished landmark in Hemel Hempstead’s countryside.

Lovingly referred to as “The Winkwell” by locals due to its location, this charming establishment has been family-run for the past 15 years. It offers distinct areas for guests to enjoy its ambience: the intimate Tac Bar, perfect for cosy winter dining and featuring a romantic cubby hole; a dog-friendly main bar section; and a spectacular canal-side terrace, where visitors can watch narrowboats glide by during the warmer months.

With its exposed beams and traditional decor, The Three Horseshoes expertly balances historic heritage with contemporary offerings. It serves freshly prepared, handmade dishes that elevate classic pub fare, all while providing a perfect vantage point to appreciate the serene beauty of canal life that has flowed through this corner of Hertfordshire for centuries.

Stopped off for a Shandy on my travels. Lovely setting and imagine it can get really busy.

Great home made cooked food, great friendly service, great location on the canal edge and away from the main road.

Lovely waterside position by the canal; very popular and good, standard Sunday roast.

It was very busy when we were there and they were short staffed, which meant they were rushed off their feet.

Under the circumstances they did an excellent job and looked after us very well so thank you very much for your professionalism ,efficiency and kindness. We really appreciate it.

Dining in here was an experience. Its nicely tucked away from main streets. A great pub with its traditional look and feel both in and out. We had a great time and enjoyed some amazing food.
